What is Permanent Makeup?

Permanent makeup is a cosmetic technique that employs tattoos (permanent pigmentation of the dermis) as a means of producing designs that resemble makeup, such as eyelining and other permanent enhancing colors to the skin of the face, lips, and eyelids. It is also used to produce artificial eyebrows, particularly in people who have lost them as a consequence of old age, disease, such as alopecia totalis, chemotherapy, or a genetic disturbance, and to disguise scars and white spots in the skin such as in vitiligo. It is also used to restore or enhance the breast's areola, such as after breast surgery.
Most commonly called permanent cosmetics, other names include derma pigmentation, micro pigmentation, and cosmetic tattooing, the latter being most appropriate since permanent makeup is applied under sterile conditions similar to that of a tattoo. In the United States, the inks used in permanent makeup are subject to approval as cosmetics by the Food and Drug Administration. The pigments used in the inks are color additives, which are subject to pre-market approval under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. However, because of other competing public health priorities in the United States and a previous lack of evidence of safety problems specifically associated with these pigments, FDA traditionally has not exercised regulatory authority for color additives on the pigments used in tattoo inks

Is permanent makeup similar to tattooing?

It has some of the same qualities, yet it is very different. Only specialists in micro-pigmentation can perform this procedure on the face; tattoo artists cannot. Permanent-Line uses only the techniques, tools, and pigments specifically designed for micro-pigmentation procedures, making it safe, sterile, and painless. Permanent makeup clinicians also use effective topical anesthetics that are not allowed for use by tattoo artists. Permanent-Line uses instruments much more delicate in design that provide natural-looking results.

Is permanent makeup a safe procedure?

At Permanent-Line, the procedures are performed under sterile conditions, using only disposable needle cartridges and digitally controlled implantation devices. There are no long-term side effects; short-term effects may include some redness, swelling, and tenderness. There are no known allergic reactions to pigments.

How long does the procedure take to complete?

The average time required for a procedure is between one to two hours.

How long does permanent makeup last?

Gradual fading can be expected for all micro-pigmentation procedures. This varies among people and is dependent on the specific shade used. Most colors last three to five years, although some may not fade for as long as 10 years. Periodic touchups are recommended to maintain the desired look. You can also choose to change colors of your permanent makeup. For instance, nude lip colour can be modified from a peachy pink or brown eyeliner to a black or navy hue.

How Much does Permanent Makeup Cost?

Brows$250
Light Lips$250
Eyeliner$300
Microblading$300

Is It Painful?

Most people experience some discomfort. This will vary according to each individual’s pain threshold. There are different methods available, however, to help with discomfort management, including various topical anesthetics that are specifically developed for our industry. Your permanent cosmetic professional should discuss these methods with you to determine which one is appropriate. To put this in perspective, thousands of body art tattoos are performed annually, possibly millions.

As a rule, traditional tattoo professionals do not use any anesthetics for their tattoo procedures. Anesthetics for permanent cosmetics are more of a tattoo service luxury because of the nature of the tattoo location and the fact that permanent cosmetics fall into the beauty treatment category.

Are There Any Side Effects During or After the Procedure?

While eyebrows may show little after effect, eyeliner and lips may show slight to moderate swelling. This is very dependent upon the amount of work performed. For example; an eyelash enhancement will show very little response to the tattooing procedure compared to a more moderate response when wide eyeliner is performed.

The same philosophy applies to lip color procedures. A lip liner or blended lip liner will show fewer effects of the procedure than that of full lip colour. Also, some people swell more from minor skin infractions than others. During the procedure, there may be some minor bleeding. This again is client-specific. Many people take blood thinners on a daily basis so some slight bleeding would be expected. Others show little or no signs of bleeding.

Bruising is rare but again, if a person is on blood thinners, bruising could occur. What is seen more often is that eyebrows rarely if ever produce any bruising; minor bruising during eyeliner procedures is possible if the skin being tattooed is very thin and close to the vascular system. This also applies to lip procedures in the event the client is more mature. If bruising does occur, typically it is minor and subsides in a few days. There is usually some tenderness for a few days. The color is much darker than you may expect for the first six to ten days.

Other less often reported side effects are difficult to determine due to the individuality of each person’s biological system. This is why professional permanent cosmetic technicians require a client history profile to be filled out to assess different factors that may contribute to your experience after the tattooing procedure has been completed.
